The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston: “Keepers of the Flame”
Founded in 1932, the Gridiron Club promotes the game of football at all levels and nurtures the ideals of citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership, and athletic and academic achievement. Through its annual dinners and golf tournament, the club carries on its tradition of honoring exemplary players, coaches and officials at all levels of sport.
The George H. “Bulger” Lowe Award, established in 1939 and awarded to New England’s best college football player, is the second oldest honor of its kind in American sport after the Heisman Trophy. The Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award, inaugurated in 1946, honors college football players who distinguish themselves in the classroom. The club assumed responsibility for the Walter Brown Award, the nation’s oldest college hockey honor, in 1977.
Proceeds from the first-ever Gridiron Club Dinner, held in the darkest days of the Great Depression, assisted those in financial need. In recent years, the Gridiron Club has supported many worthy causes, including: the Italian Home for Children, United Cerebral Palsy of the North Shore, the Massachusetts State Hospital School for Children, the Miami Project to Help Cure Paralysis, the Ron Burton Training Center, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Easter Seals of Massachusetts, the Kennedy-Donovan Center, the Joslin Diabetes Center, the South Norfolk County Association for Retarded Citizens, and the Seven Hills Foundation.
The Gridiron Club is run entirely by volunteers. We are supported by members’ dues and contributions, gifts from the business community, and proceeds from annual dinners and events. The club welcomes membership applications from coaches, officials, journalists, and fans of all sports.
